Delhi Pollution Crisis Deepens: AQI Touches 350, Several Areas Record Severe Air Quality

Delhi News Environment Trending News

New Delhi, November 3, 2026: The national capital is once again struggling with worsening air pollution as a thick blanket of smog engulfs Delhi and surrounding areas. Air quality has deteriorated sharply ahead of Diwali, raising serious concerns over public health.According to the latest reports, Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 350 on Tuesday, placing it in the 'Very Poor' category. Several monitoring stations across the city, however, recorded AQI levels above 400, falling into the 'Severe' category

Several Areas Report Severe Pollution

Among the worst-affected locations, Jahangirpuri recorded an alarming AQI of 462, while Rohini, Punjabi Bagh and other parts of the capital also experienced dangerously high pollution levels.Out of 57 monitoring stations reporting data, 10 recorded severe air quality, while 35 remained in the very poor category.

What Is Causing Delhi’s Pollution?

Experts have identified multiple factors contributing to the worsening situation, including:

  • Vehicular emissions and increasing traffic congestion.

  • Crop-residue burning in neighbouring states.

  • Construction activities and road dust.

  • Industrial emissions and waste burning.

  • Unfavourable weather conditions and weak winds that prevent pollutants from dispersing.

The contribution of stubble burning and transport emissions has further increased concerns about pollution levels in the coming days.

GRAP Stage-II Restrictions Implemented

In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage-II measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR.

The measures include intensified mechanical road sweeping, water sprinkling, stricter inspections at construction sites and efforts to reduce traffic congestion. Authorities are also encouraging people to use public transport.

Health Advisory: Residents Urged to Take Precautions

The rising concentration of fine particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, poses serious health risks. Prolonged exposure can affect the lungs and cardiovascular system, with children, elderly people and individuals with respiratory conditions being particularly vulnerable.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

  • Wear a well-fitted N95 mask when going outside.

  • Keep windows and doors closed during periods of heavy pollution.

  • Avoid outdoor exercise, particularly during early morning and late evening hours.

  • Seek medical advice if experiencing breathing difficulties or persistent coughing.

Pollution Concerns Ahead of Diwali

With Diwali approaching, concerns are growing that firecracker emissions could further worsen the already deteriorating air quality.

The coming days will be crucial as authorities attempt to control pollution levels and protect public health across the national capital.
